Michael's Haul and an Outfit Post

It's times like these, readers, where I am infinitely glad that Halloween goods are stocked as early as July and August in my local stores. You see, from what I've gathered from my UK Goth friends, Halloween isn't as big a deal in the UK as it is in the US and shopping for decor around Halloween time can be pretty hit or miss. For a while now I've been poking around my local stores and trying to see what I can find this early in the season. Luckily, Michael's has been a boon to Goths like myself who can't participate in the later shenanigans in the year. So, I'd like to show you a couple things that I picked up from Michael's recently.

Skull patterned ribbon, around 2USD...

...which promptly became the place-marker ribbon in my new planner, which is a larger version of the planner I talked about previously on this blog. The pages you are seeing are the boring ones at the back of the book which I covered in scrapbook paper (I did this to the front pages as well with a nice damask print.) I'm currently trying to figure up how to cover up the boo-boos on my skeleton page from having too much glue...

Here's more ribbon that I bought for 2USD. It's white with letters printed that describe Halloween and little red blood splatters. I haven't found a use for this yet, but it was so adorable I had to get it! I think I'll use a strip of it around the handle of my suitcase so that I can easily identify it when pulling it off the baggage carousel, but I don't know what else to do with it. Hair ornaments, maybe?

This was my favorite thing I bought, personally. Michael's is currently selling little unpainted balsa wood coffin boxes for 1USD each and they're perfect for storing little things in and giving a little DIY attention to. This might be something that I buy more of before I leave because I like it so much. This one is plain black, but you can see the potential for other designs. Beetlejuice stripes! Bats! Skulls! The possibilities are endless.

To keep the coffin from being too boring, I lined it with black and white damask flocked scrapbook paper. I still need to clean off the paint from the hinges and clasp, though....

Another really cute thing I bought was this "Spooky!" pillow for 12USD. I think this is going to be coming with me to Scotland because it's relatively light (it can fit in my travel bag) and gives a tiny touch of spookiness to my drab, drab dorm room. There was also one that said "Happy Halloween!" on it but, as I'm sure I've stated before, I try to avoid Halloween branded things when shopping around Halloween time out of personal preference.

Also, I posted this picture to my Tumblr already, but I think this is one of my favorite outfits as of late. Here's the rundown:
Blouse: thrifted
Jacket, socks: Camden
Overskirt, underskirt: Fanplusfriend
Boots: Demonia
Ankh necklace: Otakon 2010
Rings: Various

So, readers, have you gotten anything for Halloween yet?

  1. wow! Those are some great finds! So jealous! In Australia Halloween is very small compared to America. People dress up a bit, it's not really a big deal. I did get some awesome lantern skulls one year. they were a bit defective and the batteries all melted overnight. I haven't been able to find them since which sucks as I wanted some more.

    1. That really is rather annoying that they all died so quickly and that, in general, the holiday isn't so big. Hopefully there are still a couple good finds to be had this year!

  2. I bought some of those little coffins last year as well, and had great fun dressing them up with black paint and some Martha Stewart spooky-themed rhinestone stickers that Michael's was also selling. We seem to get Halloween stock in slightly later than you do in the U.S., but you've got me thinking I should go take a look this week, just in case! ;o)

    1. You probably should! I mean, there's no harm in checking, right? ;) Well, besides the tellers thinking that we're all batshit bonkers, of course. I might look into those spooky rhinestone stickers, thanks for the idea!

  3. Living in the US and hearing that world-wide goths have less access to delightful Halloween finds like this makes me a sad bat! You could try US amazon for interesting bits and pieces.

I am also jealous of your blood spatter ribbon! I have my bathroom decorated with Think Geek's "Horror Movie" curtain and mat set. http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/b9b2/ I'd love to add some of that ribbon to make matching towels!

    1. I think that's an excellent idea! I wonder if they're selling it online anywhere? It seems likely.

I have a $10 Amazon gift card to spend...maybe I'll look around for some cheap Halloween stuff!

  4. I've bought some patterned duck tape, but that's all I've seen that I liked so far. I'm waiting for my local Dollar store to start stocking Halloween socks. My husband is getting very anxious about letting me out and about on my own, at least until November!

    1. I wish my local Dollar store had Halloween socks, I would buy all of them! I think Five Below has them, but not many. It sounds like your husband doesn't have much to complain about so far, though that did make me laugh.

  5. I have quite a bit of Halloween stuff, some just for the season, and some for all year round, so I try not to go too crazy buying too much stuff anymore. however, when our local Michaels got their Halloween stock in recently, I dashed over of course, even just looking is fun. I did buy a small very cute framed picture of a sparkly bat with a skull in the background. I think it was specified for use as a party decoration, but for me it's up on my bedroom door for all year decor.

Costco also has a poseable life size skeleton that I'm contemplating purchasing...would love to have him sitting in the living room permanently :)

btw, love the scrap book paper that you covered your planner in, very nice!
